Drainage systems in Kathmandu valley are increasingly overburdened during extreme precipitation events and are stretched to their limits by increasing populations. As a result, the streets of Kathmandu valley around Kapan-Budhanilkantha area flood every monsoon due to inadequate capacity of the sewer system and surface drainage. Hence, this project has been introduced to prepare the overall master plan of Dhobikhola catchment and detail engineering design for mitigating measures of flooding and inundation at Kapan- Budhanilkantha area.

The project consists of the preparation of technical study report for Dhobikhola corridor rehabilitation and Kapan Budanilkantha area and preparation of detailed engineering report for flood control measures as per ToR which could be implemented in the vicinity of the Kapan Area.

The scope of services includes, but not limited to, carrying out the following activities:


  • Review of all available literature, reports, and documents to gather comprehensive information, and gain insights from previous research.

  • Cross-section and longitudinal surveys in Dhobikhola and Chakuncha Khola in Kapan area at appropriate cross section

  • Conduct an in-depth examination of the hydrological characteristics of both Dhobikhola and Chakuncha Khola rivers

  • Conduct surveys using questionnaires, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and Key Informant Interviews

  • Conduct necessary social survey and other related surveys

  • Preparation of hydrological model for as per the available data

  • Synthesize historical flood hazards damages and losses and mitigation measures

  • Analyze urban flooding in terms of velocity and depth in study area using integrated pluvial and fluvial modelling

  • Develop flood hazard vulnerability and risk maps (if the existing map provided by KVDA prove insufficient for detailed analysis)

  • Find out the inundation area at Dhobikhola catchment

  • Evaluate and propose suitable mitigation measures
