The overall objective of the study is to prepare a model/algorithm of Kathmandu Valley which optimizes the use of multi-water resources available meeting the multi-water demands in the valley.

The scope of the consultancy services includes, but not limited to, following major activities:


  • Identify all the existing sources of water in Kathmandu Valley and nearby areas.

  • Uncover the multi-use of water in terms of quality and quantity.

  • Collect the information on current demand and availability of water in different sector in Kathmandu Valley.

  • Collect all the information on all pipelines (age, capacity, size, no of households that are benefitted, condition etc.) on the distribution system of water resources that are currently in use or can be utilized.

  • Check the water balance in terms of water availability, multi-demand and multi-use of water.

  • Check the water quality criteria which serve as a baseline for establishing water quality objectives in conjunction with information on water uses and side-specific factors.

  • Ensure the designated use of water, based on quality like its use for drinking-water supply, livestock watering, irrigation, fisheries, recreation or other purposes, while supporting and maintaining aquatic ecosystems and any.

  • Analysis data and information obtained and collected.

  • Optimization sensitivity analysis should be carried out.

  • Calculate and predict (forecasting) the multi-water resources and multi-water demands with their quantity of the study areas.

  • Mapping of all the water resources, water demands, etc. in GIS.

  • Develop an optimization framework/model for real-time optimum intake of water from diverse water sources to enable a sustainable water supply system.

  • Develop the cost curve of the intake, treatment and distribution system and prepare a comprehensive report and submit to the client.
